US scientists create stem cells from cloned embryos
Science and cultureAccording to Deutsche Presse-Agentur US scientists have created stem cells from cloned embryos, a development that has far-reaching medical implications and could also bring the possibility of cloning humans that much closer.
Scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University used somatic cell nuclear transfer, a technique used to clone animals.
The scientists used skin cells from a child and fused them with donated human eggs to create human embryos that were genetically identical to the child.
The stem cells were then extracted from those embryos.
The researchers said their goal was to advance therapeutic cloning, a technique that creates stem cells identical to a specific patient that can then be used to grow any type of cell found in the body.
Researchers envisage using these cells in transplant operations as they would reduce the risk of organ anв tissue rejection.
