US condemns violence to effect political change in Armenia – Department of State
ԱՐԽԻՎ

A deputy spokesperson for the US Department of State has voiced the administration’s disapproval of the Sunday deadly attack on a police station in Yerevan and the continuing hostage standoff that followed the incident.
“We obviously condemn strongly the use of violence to effect political change in Armenia or anywhere. We encourage Armenian authorities to handle the situation with appropriate restraint,” Mark Toner said at the daily press briefing on Tuesday.
He also extended his condolences to the family of the policeman killed in the armed clashes.
The petrol police regiment of the Armenian Police was seized by armed opposition activists representing the Founding Parliament movement in the early hours of Sunday. The group still keeps four policemen hostage under the threat of violence, demanding the release of Zhirayr Sefilyan, the Founding Parliament’s leader who was detained in June over the illegal possession and transportation of weapons.
