ՆԱՍԱ-ն սկսել է VIPER լուսնագնացի կառուցումը, որը Լուսնի վրա ջուր կորոնի: Ինչպես հայտնում է Ars Technica պորտալը, այն կիջնի Երկրի արբանյակի խառնարանների հատակը, որտեղ արևի լույսը երբեք չի հասել։

Առաքելության մասին NASA-ն հայտարարել էր դեռևս 2019 թվականին։ Ֆորմալ առումով դա Resource Prospector առաքելության շարունակությունն է, որը չեղարկվել է 2018 թվականին՝ գործակալության՝ կոմերցիոն ծրագրերին անցնելու պատճառով։ Սակայն կազմակերպությունը չի պահպանել զարգացման ժամանակացույցը, ինչի պատճառով՝ առաքելությունը 2023 թվականի նոյեմբերից հետաձգվել է 2024 թվականի նոյեմբեր։ Առաքելության ընդհանուր արժեքը հասնում է 500 միլիոն դոլարի՝ ներառյալ SpaceX Falcon Heavy հրթիռի արձակման վճարը։

Ռովերն ինքնին գոլֆի սայլի չափ կլինի։ Այն հագեցած է հզոր լուսարձակներով, որոնք թույլ կտան ուսումնասիրել խառնարանի մակերեսը։ VIPER-ը ձմեռելու է Լուսնի վրա, մինչև որ վայրէջքի վայրը հեռանա Երկրի տեսադաշտից:

Նշենք, որ Լուսնի վրա ջրի նշանները հայտնաբերվել են 2009 թվականին հնդկական Chandrayaan 1 արբանյակի կողմից: Գիտնականները հույս ունեն, որ խառնարաններում դրա մեծ պաշարներ կլինեն սառույցի տեսքով: Շերտի հաստությունը որոշելու համար VIPER-ը կունենա մեկ մետր երկարությամբ գայլիկոն։
