US Supreme Court ruled Colorado cannot ban Trump from presidential ballot

The US Supreme Court ruled on March 4 that former President Donald Trump could not be removed from the ballot in Colorado or any other state – a sweeping and historic ruling that brushed aside a lawsuit claiming that he disqualified himself from office because of his actions on January 6, 2021, CNN reports.

In a repudiation of the notion that Trump’s actions left him ineligible under the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban,” a unanimous court ruled that an individual state could not dump the former president from the ballot.

Colorado had barred Trump from its Republican primary, arguing he incited the 2021 Capitol riot.

The court ruled that it is Congress that can enforce the provision, not the states.

Besides Colorado, Maine and Illinois had also removed Trump from their state ballots.

On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump supporters attacked police and swarmed the Capitol in a bid to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Trump gave an incendiary speech to supporters beforehand, telling them to go to the Capitol and “fight like hell.” According to Reuters, he then for hours did not act on requests that he urge the mob to stop.
