"Hraparak": Why does not Serzh Sargsyan have real competitor?
Armenian Press"Hraparak" talked to NA MP Tigran Torosyan. An excerpt from the conversation is below:
“Mr. Torosyan, what’s your opinion of the 2013 presidential election, particularly in the light of the absence of an opposition candidate? Was the radical opposition’s retreat expected, especially when we remember how promising Loevn Ter-Petrosyan’s return to big politics was?”
“It could have been foreseen given the serious problems in the multi-party system. Unfortunately, in Armenia, the multi-party system grew perverted, without reaching its maturity. All the rest are the consequences. Everything related to Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s return was not properly pre-arranged; it was just built on the preferences of difference parties and people. But the real political life is normally built on political parties’ activities.”
“Serzh Sargsyan is running for election without a competitor, what is the status he has found himself in? Is it an easy way or just the contrary, as he may be face a higher degree of responsibility?”
“Perhaps, that’s an easy way with respect to the upcoming election. I think it is obvious to all that he is not going to face a challenger. But on the other hand, I am sure the country is facing serious problems, particularly in terms of the multi-party system building efforts. So obviously, as a president and as a candidate expected to have no serious competitor in the upcoming election, unfortunately, , who is almost certainly a future president, will face a trouble over those questions. So, searching for solutions here is among the key questions he has to solve in the near future.”
