Earthquake again strikes Turkey’s Van
TurkeyLast night, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Van, the Sabah newspaper reported on Thursday.
According to data received from Kandili Observatory of Bogazici University and Earthquake Research Institute, the earthquake occurred at 3:45 am local time at a depth of five kilometers.
No information on casualties or damage is available so far.
Van Province is shaken by quakes since October 2011. A strong earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck the city on October 23. This was followed by several powerful aftershocks of 5.1-6.1 magnitude in the region throughout the day. Over 600 people died and 4,000 thousands were injured. Some 2,362 buildings were destroyed.
Turkey is located in a seismically active zone, and earthquakes, which often lead to loss of life, is a common scenario there. The most powerful oscillations of the earth's crust in the country were reported in 1999 in the Sea of Marmara. A 7.4 magnitude quake killed nearly 18,000 people.
