Ex-mayor Hayk Marutyan stripped of Yerevan municipal council mandate

Former mayor Hayk Marutyan has been stripped of the mandate of the Yerevan Council of Elders; the respective decision was made by the council a little while ago.

"Out of 42 votes, Hayk Marutyan attended 0 votes," said Armen Galjyan from the ruling coalition while presenting the respective draft, adding that Marutyan did not participate either in the meetings of the council or of its commission, which is a legal basis for stripping him of his mandate.

Marutyan was stripped of the mandate of the Yerevan municipal council with 34 votes in favor and 0 against.

The former mayor noted in his remarks that stripping him of this mandate was a purely political decision by the ruling force.

The matter of stripping the mandates of five opposition members is on the agenda of Wednesday’s special session of the Yerevan city council. These council members are Narine Hayrapetyan, Hayk Marutyan, Sona Aghekyan, Gevorg Stepanyan, and Zaruhi Postanjyan.

At least 33 members are needed for a quorum to hold a session of the Yerevan Council of Elders. The ruling coalition has 32 members. In addition to the ruling coalition, two members of the opposition Public Voice faction attended, and this enabled today’s session to be held.
