FACTBOX: Ukrainian attack on Feodosia in Crimea kills one, damages amphibious landing ship

A missile strike by the Ukrainian armed forces on Feodosia, Crimea, has killed one person and left two others wounded, and damaged the Novocherkassk, a Russian Navy amphibious assault landing ship, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

According to the ministry, the two Ukrainian air force Su-24 fighter jets that attacked Feodosia were shot down some 125 kilometers northeast of the city of Nikolayev.

Circumstances of attack

- Head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov reported an attack on the port of Feodosia at 4:16 a.m. local time (1:16 a.m. GMT). According to him, by then explosions from detonations of ordnance stored at the port had ended and the resulting fire was contained.

- The Russian Defense Ministry specified that Ukrainian aircraft had fired guided airborne missiles.

- The two Ukrainian Su-24 aircraft that had fired missiles at Feodosia were destroyed by Russian air defenses near the village of Zhovten (125 kilometers northeast of Nikolayev), the ministry added.

Consequences

- One person was killed and two people sustained wounds, the Crimean authorities said.

- The Novocherkassk, a large amphibious assault landing ship, suffered damage.

- The authorities also said that windows had been shattered in six buildings. Damage to a train station building was reported.

Response of authorities

- The local authorities are making plans to temporarily resettle residents of several buildings adjacent to the site of the attack. Six people were evacuated to temporary accommodation centers.

- Scheduled commuter train service to Feodosia was suspended, and all trains were redirected to the Aivazovskaya station.

- In general, train service is continuing to operate normally in Crimea, regional Transport Minister Nikolay Lukashenko said. According to him, the Crimean Bridge over the Kerch Strait is open to traffic and ferry service remains operational.

- Streets adjacent to the coastline are temporarily closed to traffic in Feodosia. Bus schedules have been adjusted accordingly.
