EU considering suspending assistance to Georgia

The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of suspending its assistance to Georgia amid the entry of the  law “on transparency of foreign influence” into force in the country. This was stated by Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission of the EU, in an interview with the Spanish edition of Europa Press.

Stano noted that the EU diplomatic service is seriously concerned about the latest events in Georgia, and the aforesaid controversial law’s entry into force in the country is a step back on its way towards integration into the European Union, reports SOVA.

According to Stano, in the short term, the EU has already reduced its political contacts with Georgian officials, except for those who are focused on finding a way out of the current situation.

The EU is considering suspending its financial assistance to the Georgian government, Stano said, noting that the European Union has already frozen 30 million euros in military aid to Georgia within the framework of the European Peace Facility.
