Syrian government welcomes joint proposal by Lavrov and Kerry
Middle East
The Syrian government has welcomed a joint proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the US State Secretary John Kerry, and has voiced optimism about the initiative, adding though that they needed the details.
This came in an interview with the Al-Manar TV channel by the Syrian Information Minister, Omran az-Zoabi.
Damascus will decide on whether it will attend an international conference on a settlement in Syria only after learning the details of the Russian and US proposal, the Minister said, TASS reports.
Earlier this month, Lavrov and Kerry reached agreement to encourage the Syrian government and the opposition striving for dialogue.
In view of this, the two Foreign Ministers decided to call an international conference later this month as a follow-up to the Geneva conference.
