The Nigerian authorities have imposed a state of emergency in the north-east of the country due to the increased activity of Islamists, said the country's president Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday.
According to him the measures are necessary in order to properly respond to the escalating violence by the radical Islamist group Boko Haram.
In the region troops were deployed to carry out operations against the terrorists.
Boko Haram is advocating the overthrow of the secular government in Nigeria and the proclamation of a state based on the principles of Sharia Law.
