Atlético breaks Real Madrid drought to claim Copa
Sport
Atlético Madrid ended a 14-year winless streak against city rivals Real Madrid in grand fashion with a 2-1 win in extra time in the final of the Copa del Rey at Madrid's Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. It is the 10th Copa won by the 'Rojiblancos' and ends a futile stretch against 'Los Blancos' whom they had not beaten since a 1-3 win at the Bernabeu in 1999.
Madrid boss José Mourinho raised a few eyebrows in his starting XI by putting Ángel Di María on the bench to start while Pepe once again did not even make the gameday roster. In defense, the Special One opted for Michael Essien and Fabio Coentrão as his fullbacks while Sergio Ramos and Raúl Albiol were slotted in as center backs and tasked with the duty of taming 'El Tigre' Radamel Falcao. As for Atlético, there were no surprises from manager Diego Simeone since 'El Cholo' had announced his starting XI in his press conference the previous day.
