Atlético Madrid seal Copa del Rey glory (video)

During the Spanish Civil War, in the midst of poverty and hunger in Madrid, the statue of Neptune had a sign hung from its neck that read: "Give me something to eat or take the fork away." Last night Atlético produced for their God after a fourteen-year drought in the Madrid derbies, fourteen years of woe and disappointment. Last night 'Los Colchoneros' were true to their legend, an unpredictable yet dignified team. The cup deservedly belongs in their hands, and without knowing if this triumph will lead to a new era for Atlético one thing is sure: José Mourinho's tenure at Real Madrid has come to an end.
It was a great and emotional spectacle, and the joy for Atlético and their fans was enough to put pay to Madrid domination, a Madrid side that will now be drying their tears and licking their wounds.
After 13 minutes, Cristiano opened the scoring. Mesut Özil took his side's second corner and the Portuguese forward showed greater determination to get to the ball than any of the Atleti defence. Suddenly it seemed that the cold night was turning into a Madrid-derby groundhog day for Atlético.
Cristiano was sent off for kicking Gabi, the respective dugouts came out to protest and Courtois went down clutching his head after being hit by something from the crowd. In this moment there seemed to be something in the air, something blowing in the wind that Mourinho himself had stirred up. Madrid had a penalty shout rightly turned down and Atlético began to see out the game with the cup in sight and all the pain, hurt and bad memories fading away. Fourteen years waiting for this moment. Fourteen years waiting for the sweetest of victories. Caviar for Neptune and a pure shot of Atleti.
