24 May is considered to be the birthday of Shakhtar Donetsk. Stakhanovets Stalino played their first game 77 years ago. This date in 1936 is a starting point of our team’s future triumphs.

Throughout our history, Shakhtar have been growing and developing. Eras have been changing, with different generations of outstanding Pitmen shinning on the football field. Trophies have been won in hard-fought battles. The first USSR Cup and the first USSR Super Cup... Remarkable achievements by Degteryov, Sokolovskiy, goalscoring heroics by Starukhin...

The years of Ukraine's independence. Within a few years, Shakhtar have become the leading club of the country, showcasing impressive performance and clinching trophies on a regular basis. This season, the Pitmen have become the league champions for the eighth time. A victory in the 2009 UEFA Cup led the club to the new European level. The goal of the modern-day Shakhtar is to storm the heights of the Champions League.

The Pitmen claim all their wins for their fans, and thanks to their support. It was and will always be so. On our birthday the club thank all those who have contributed to the proud name of Shakhtar! No doubt there are many glorious days and occasions for joy ahead.
