May 25 - Day of the Philologist

On May 25 is the Day of the philologist. This date is close and expensive to all who is anyway bound to philology — to graduates and teachers of philological faculties, teachers of Russian and literature, employees of libraries, translators and simply judges of the native language and literature.

Philology is the area of knowledge studying written texts and on the basis of their substantial, language and stylistic analysis — history and substance of spiritual culture of this society.

At 17-18 centuries the philology developed as a science studying ancient culture (language, literature, history, philosophy, art in their coherence).

With differentiation of separate sciences the content of concept of philology changed: philology began to understand as set of the sciences studying culture of the people, expressed in language and literary creativity.
