Daily Mail. Former BBC presenter criticized over comment that “rape isn’t always rape”

Former BBC broadcaster Nick Ross faced a storm of protest over the comments he made in his book where he claimed that rape victims were partly responsible if they were drunk or provocatively dressed, and domestic violence against women was exaggerated.
The former Crimewatch presenter on BBC One, Nick Ross, 65, wrote in his book “half of all women who have had penetrative sex unwillingly do not think they were raped, and this proportion rises strongly when the assault involves a boyfriend, or if the woman is drunk or high on drugs: they went too far, it wasn't forcible, they didn't make themselves clear. For them, rape isn't always rape and however upsetting, they feel is a long way removed from being systematically violated or snatched off the street."
Mr. Ross, 65, who presented Crimewatch from 1984 to 2007, provoked outrage among campaigners against rape and on social networking sites, after a number of newspapers reported that he had suggested "rape isn't always rape".
Sarah Green, a campaigner with the End Violence Against Women charity, said that this chapter of the book was “disappointing” and “horrible”, and that such “a reputable journalist like Nick Ross, with expertise associated with crime through Crimewatch, is trotting out with the same spurious myths about rape."
Campaigners described his remarks as ‘outdated and ridiculous’ and former Conservative MP Louise Mensch described the extract as ‘pretty damning’.
The public outrage by this comment comes after the comments done by Ken Clarke, the then-justice secretary, faced calls to resign for using the words "serious rape", and after another former BBC presenter, Jimmy Savile, was accused of systematical sex abuses.
The book Crime by Nick Ross is serialised in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.
