The next Arava Agricultural R&D exhibition will feature a new Israeli development: the black tomato.
“Black Galaxy” was developed by Technological Seeds DM. The company says the color is produced by a special pigment derived from blueberries.
The Israeli daily Yediot Achronot quoted the developers as saying that the pigment also carries health benefits, such as a high concentration of antioxidants and vitamin C, both believed to help boost the immune system and prevent disease.
The black tomato will make its public debut along with purple carrots and red lemons at the Arava Agricultural R&D exhibition next week. More than 250 companies from Israel and around the world will participate in the expo, which is open to the public.
For now the black tomatoes are slated for export only.
