The main opposition group in Syria - the Syrian National Council (NAC) - has called on the League of Arab States (LAS) to recognize it as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, RIA Novosti reports with reference to Arab media.
Since mid-March Syria has been in a state of continuing anti-government protests. The opposition reports that more than 4,100 Syrians have been killed since the movement began. According to UN statistics, the number of victims of the riots is 3,500. The Syrian authorities talk about more about 1,500 dead on both sides.
The opposition demands the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad and political transformation. The US and EU have urged Assad to resign, insisting on the application of sanctions against the country.
On Saturday, November 12, the Arab League will hold an emergency meeting of a special commission on Syria to discuss the recent developments in the country. Last week the foreign ministers of the Arab League endorsed a settlement plan for Syria. The initiative of the League provides, inter alia, for a ceasefire, withdrawal of armored units from the settlements and the initiation of dialogue with the opposition.
