Russian Volga region’s cities welcome Paralympic torch relay
World
On Monday, the Paralympic torch relay arrives in the very heart of Russia - to the Volga region, where it will be welcomed by four cities in the region - Saratov, Samara, Ufa, and Nizhny Novgorod.
The cities are Russia’s major centers for science and industry, which host big industrial enterprises, research institutes in car making, space, radio technique and high technologies.
Participants in the ceremony in Nizhny Novgorod will light the torch by means of photo-chemical synthesis. A five-kilometer marathon along the Volga River will feature 25 torchbearers - prominent athletes and coaches.
In Samara, the torch will be lit from the Soyuz carrier. However, organizers do not offer any details of how it would be done.
The torch relay in Saratov will go across Saratov’s historical center, where 100 torchbearers will be changing one another. Some of them are champions of the Paralympic Games in London.
