EurAsEC Institute Director justifies Armenia's step to protect its own national interests

The Russian Federation is interested that Armenia’s accession to Eurasian Economic Union be convenient for Armenia, not rushing it in connection with joining. This was announced during the press conference held in Yerevan by the Director General of the EurAsEC Institute, member of the Scientific Council of RAS on complex problems of the Eurasian economic integration, modernization, competitiveness and sustainable development Vladimir Lepyokhin. "Now, different dates of Armenia’s joining the Eurasian Economic Union are indicated, no one can say precisely when it will happen. It is desirable that this process be as soon as possible, but Russia wants it to be more convenient for Armenia and with the consent of the other countries, at the same time putting no time limits. Besides, the Eurasian Economic Union is not only Russia, it is not a pyramid, where there is one ruler. If the European Union is a pyramid, at the top of which is Euro-Bureaucracy, it is not like that in the Eurasian Economic Union. The Supreme Economic Council is at the top of decision-making here, which consists of the presidents of the member countries, and all the decisions are made by consensus,” said the Russian official, adding that this is the reason why Russia cannot suppress Kazakhstan, which in its turn is a sovereign state.
