Russia says ECHR verdict in Yukos case not an example of just assessment of legal details

Russian Justice Ministry does not take the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) verdict in the Russian oil company Yukos affair as an example of just and unbiased approach in assessing legal and factual details of the affair, the ministry said on Thursday.
“The European Human Rights Court’s taking the right to find where the sum of penalties set at the national level was grounded is bewildering, as they [sanctions] can be imposed on a debtor if the latter refused to execute voluntarily the court verdict which took effect,” the agency said.
Earlier it has been reported that ECHR ruled Russia should pay €1.86 billion to shareholders of Russian oil company Yukos in compensation to their lawsuit against the country tried back in 2011.

The decision is not final and can be appealed in the ECHR Grand Chamber by a litigating party within three months.
At first plaintiffs claimed $98 billion.
Yukos oil giant was accused of tax crimes and declared a bankrupt by a court ruling in 2006 while its assets were sold at auctions during the liquidation procedure.
