US leader calls for unity as Scotland votes on independence

US President Barack Obama has made an appeal for people in Scotland to vote ‘no’ at the historic referendum on Thursday, saying he hopes Britain remains “united.”
“The UK is an extraordinary partner for America and a force for good in an unstable world. I hope it remains strong, robust and united,” the White House wrote on its official Twitter feed on Wednesday.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said earlier this week the vote is a "decision for the people of Scotland to make.”
Over 4 million Scottish voters will head to the polls on Thursday to decide whether to remain part of the United Kingdom or an independent country.
If the majority says ‘yes’ to a divorce from the UK, independence will be proclaimed March 24, 2016, and the parliamentary election will be held in May of the same year.
