Two militants killed in Dagestan.
Russia
Ria Novosti - Two militants were killed in a special operation in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, on Monday, law enforcement agencies reported.
“Two militants were killed as a result of a clash during a special operation,” a law enforcement spokesman said.
“One of them has been preliminarily identified as Eldos Zulfukarov, the ringleader of a Makhachkala-based subversive and terrorist group,” he said.
Zulfukarov was blamed for murders of Federal Security Service officers.
In a separate incident, police destroyed a militant base in the republic’s Karabudakhkent District.
Russia has been battling a low-level Islamist insurgency in the region. Volatile Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, has seen around half of all militant attacks in Russia in the past two years.
According to official data, Dagestan registered 96 militant attacks on police officers and 100 shootouts between police and militants in 2011.
