Armenian Ambassador to the UN criticizes Azerbaijan’s activity over Armenia’s Nuclear Power Plant.

Armenian Ambassador to the United Nations Karen Nazaryan presented Armenia’s approaches over the safety of the country’s Metsamor nuclear power plant to the UN Security Council members.

Getting inspired with the senseless comments of the President of Azerbaijan at the Seoul nuclear security summit, the Azerbaijani delegation tried to repeat the unsuccessful propaganda of its president at the UN Security Council, raising discontent among a number of member states. Armenian ambassador stressed that the statement of the Azerbaijani side ‘should be viewed as a repeated part of Azerbaijan’s anti-Armenian book and not as observations relating to the security level of Armenia’s nuclear power plant’.

‘The information presented by Azerbaijan includes a number of falsifications about the security of Armenia’s nuclear power plant. Instead of making groundless observations and showing disrespect toward the Security Council procedure, the Azerbaijani government and its representatives would better ground their statements on the basis of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and experts’ assessments’

Nazaryan informed that in June 2011a group of international experts headed by the IAEA studied the activities aimed at ensuring the security of Armenia’s nuclear power plant. After the studies a report was prepared saying that ‘Armenia is highly assessed for its open cooperation ’

During the recent visit of the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano it was stated that Armenia stays committed to the international nuclear security provisions and promotes their implementation. In cooperation with the IAEA Armenia continuously strengthens the safety and implements events addressed to the establishment of strong and united security standards.

‘Unfortunately, wishing to use the opportunity of being non-permanent member of the Security Council for discrediting Armenia, Azerbaijan forgets to check the information and facts. It is necessary to remind that such careless statements are not only inadmissible in the Council but endanger the regional security and peace. Armenia calls on Azerbaijan to direct its energy and resources toward participation in the negotiations within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group and the achievement of long-lasting settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict instead of wasting it on groundless and provocative actions in the UN Security Council,’ Karen Nazaryan stressed.
