Today the European Parliament in its extended plenary session, among other things, discusses the situation in Artsakh.
Speeches were made during the Extended Plenary Session of the European Parliament by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and members of the European Parliament Frank Engel, Jaromir Stetina and Eleni Theocharous, who addressed the issue of Nagorno Karabakh.
"Just a small step was required to avoid the large-scale clashes, so we are increasing our efforts towards the peaceful resolution of the conflict. People have suffered too much. The conflict continues to threaten our neighborhood and hampers the development of the two countries and the whole region," – said Federica Mogherini, adding that the South Caucasus is an important region for Europe: it is a crossroad and it has great potential, which is suspended due to instability and wars.
MEP Frank Engel, addressed to the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, noting that Nagorno Karabakh status quo will increase the volume of violence.
"For one reason especially, because today Azerbaijan remains an aggressor, as it was 24 years ago. This country has continued to violate the ceasefire in a smaller scale for a long time, because it believes that all Armenians should disappear from this region," - he said, adding that is why it does not accept any proposal of the OSCE Minsk Group and does not go to any compromise.
"As Armenians do not want to go to any compromise with a country that glorifies Ramil Safarov, a brutal murderer who was extradited to that country and that should not have happened. The only thing that should happen in this case is the recognition," - he said.
Not to support Karabakh and Armenia would be in favor of brutal Soviet nationalist policy Jaromir Stetina is sure.
MEP Jaromir Stetina announced that he has exclusively supported the Nagorno Karabakh Republic for many years and explained why.
"Bolshevik state artificially transferred Karabakh to Azerbaijan, using the principle "divide et impera." Not to support Karabakh and Armenia would be in favor of brutal Soviet nationalist policy," - he said.
MEP Eleni Theocharous noted in her speech that it is necessary to impose sanctions against Baku.
"We should support NKR people who are fighting for their freedom. They just cannot stay in an unfair status quo status. Nagorno Karabakh should be recognized and it is necessary to impose sanctions against Baku," - she said.
