Javakhk-Armenians Urge Clinton to Raise Issue about V. Chakhalyan’s Acquittal and Release

On the occasion of Hilary Clinton’s visit to Georgia on June 5, a petition to Clinton was submitted to “Yerkir” union. The latter submitted it to the US Embassy in Yerevan.
1650 Javakhk-Armenians signed under petition, which urges Mrs. Clinton to raise the issue of aqcuittal and release of Javakhk-Armenian politician, political prisoner Vahagn Chakhalyan.
The letter reads: “Javakhk-Armenian figure Vahagn Chakhalyan has been struggling for not only the improvment of social-economic situation of population of Javakhk, but for preservation of national, cultural and religious values of Javakhk-Armenians as well as the Armenians of the Republic of Georgia.
Given the above-mentioned activities and participation in the elections of local self government bodies of Akhlqalaq as a member of the opposition “United Javakhk” union as a result of which he took 31% votes from the ruling party, Georgian authorities started political persecutions against Vahagn Chakhalyan. “Javakhk-info” agency, “Youth” radio station were closed down, publication of “Qajatun” daily was banned. Chakhalyan was illegally arrested and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
We urge you to raise the issue of V.Chakhalyan’s acquittal and release during your visit to Georgia.”
