GETTY The former European Parliament President's Social Democratic Party (SPD) has lashed out at Angela Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) - despite the pair being coalition partners. The claws are out as the SPD claim Mrs Merkel has thrown away the legacy of her predecessor, Helmut Kohl, gambling away his credibility, as Mr Schulz eyes up the role of Chancellor in September’s elections. Mr Schulz is jetting to France for some face time with Emmanuel Macron, thought to be a pal of Mrs Merkel’s and a key influencer in the German election. Mr Schulz tweeted smug pictures of the two embracing with the caption ‘We want to reform Europe’. The pair plan to discuss the future of Europe
