Once again on the Circumvention of the Topic of European Union

We present Lurer.com’s interview with Armen Grigoryan, chairman of “Democracy for the sake of development” NGO.

Despite the predictions, concerning the inevitability of the negotiation of Eurasian Union topic in Sargsyan-Putin meeting, nothing official was said about it. Both Putin and Sargsyan avoided mentioning anything about the Eurasian Union topic. What do you think why didn’t they mention anything about the topic?
I think the President of Armenia could avoid expressing his viewpoint on the membership in European Union, at least for the reason that he hasn’t yet clarified the public attitude towards this issue. Finally, the precedents could force to that step: It’s known what happened in the case of Armenian-Turkish records, concerning the reactions of social and political forces. In addition, RA authorities gave so many multi-vector promises, that it won’t be easy to manifest a definite orientation.

Is it possible that the silence on this topic is suggested by the RA, so, that at least at this stage, when the issue concerns non-formatted structure, Armenia would not endanger the process of integration to EU?
Yerevan is in a dead-end situation. On the one hand Tigran Sargsyan published an article, where he mentioned about the intention to turn to Europe, on the other hand, Serzh Sargsyan agrees to develop the cooperation with Russia, which may be perceived as a basis for joining the Eurasian Union. It’s clear, that it’s also understood by EU officials, and they don’t need Serzh Sargsyan to make an official announcement. And in such conditions every direction is endangered, since Russia and the West extort maximal promises from Armenia for the sake of mistrust, by which only the latter is affected.

Do you consider the fact, that RA avoided the Eurasian topic at this stage an acquisition for Armenia or a failure?
In such circumstances, not speaking officially about this topic is already a failure, in concern to not denying it definitely. And as the agreement around the Madrid principles or the Armenian-Turkish records showed, every secret deal is doomed to failure, since the agreements generally do not present the public attitudes and usually receive negative response from the latter.
