USADavid Babayan, Advisor on Foreign Relations to the President of the Artsakh Republic: “Pompeo says Turkey is an aggressor and US does not accept such behavior․”, interview with Lurer.com, by Sona Harutyunyan on Oct. 16, 2020 (unofficial translation) The statement of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in which he expressed hope that the Armenians will be able to resist the Azeris, provoked very contradictory reactions in Armenia. In a conversation with LURER.com, Davit Babayan, Advisor on Foreign Relations to the President of the Artsakh Republic, noted that we should consider Pompeo's statement from two points of view. "First of all, Pompeo mentioned positive-beneficial points for us, saying that Turkey is an aggressor, that the United States does not accept such behavior and that it hopes the Armenians will win. This means that we are free to develop foreign relations as they should be, as it is imperative. In other words, we must deepen the cooperation with our brotherly countries, first of all with Russia, then with Iran, the United States and China. From this point of view, he expresses hope that we will win, and we know how to win in the battlefield, through diplomacy and forming coalitions. "This is very good, it shows that America is also dissatisfied with Turkey's behavior," he said. Babayan noted that, on the other hand, we expected a tougher response because "Turkey ignored the United States, starting a war here, not even informing the United States about it." "But unless the United States is a superpower in the world in maintaining peace, stability and balance in different regions, now Turkey is behaving in such a way! And official Washington does not seem to be trying to unleash the aggressor. What does this mean, is Washington too busy, is it weakening, or what’s that? I am sure that there will be a tough response with different sanctions, but slightly later. "At the moment, we must conduct the right geopolitics, stop the war by inflicting maximum blows and protecting our country from aggression," said the Foreign Minister's Advisor on Foreign Relations. According to him, we are facing enemies, terrorists, who are ready for anything. Therefore it is not necessary to give qualifications to other countries. "I do not agree to describe the United States as such, it is like it is. Some provocateurs took similar steps against Russia. This is not allowed because we have to be balanced, to understand who is our brother, relative, who may or may not help us in a difficult moment. But this is not done during the war, but in advance," Babayan said. Referring to the question оf whether Pompeo hinted that Washington had made some efforts to restrain Turkey, Babayan answered: "If they give a carte blanche saying `defend yourself and win´, of course, this is a restraining mechanism," concluded Davit Babayan.
