Martin Schulz: the convention on the transfer of sentenced people should not be abused for political purpose

European Parliament President Martin Schulz released a statement on Ramil Safarov’s pardon, granted by the president of Azerbaijan, which particularly reads: "The convention on the transfer of sentenced people should not be abused for political purpose. I am disturbed by what appears to be a politically motivated pardon of Safarov by the President of Azerbaijan. At the same time, I urge Azerbaijan and Armenia to avoid any moves and statements that might exacerbate the situation."
Safarov had been recognized guilty of the murder of Armenian army officer in Budapest, 2004, and had been sentenced to life in prison at the Hungary. Last month Safarov had been moved to Azerbaijan, in response Azerbaijan’s demand, based on the convention of the transfer of sentenced persons.
