Congressmen to touch upon Safarov’s issue again
USA
Granting pardon to axe-murderer Ramil Safarov by Azerbaijan, service promotion, giving him material compensation and adverse impact of those realities on peaceful process of Nagorno-Karabakh continue being source of bother for the USA congressmen, reports Armenia’s National Committee’s website in the US.
Congressman Robert Dold responsible for Armenian Genocide issue today said, that Safarov’s extradition and glorifying him by President Aliyev are “very bothering” and noted, that instead of soothing the tension, this step points utter ignorance of NKR reconciliation and peaceful process.
Another congressman John Sarbanes said, that Aliyev’s actions “have no justification” and added: “Azerbaijan’s actions were directed to undermine justice to the detriment of everyone and in the interests of murderer confessing his crime.”
Robert Menendez, which has always plainly criticized threats of war which were coming from Azerbaijan towards Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, said he was “terrified” by the fact of Safarov’s extradition and granting pardon and is “indignant and loathed” from reception, that was organized for Safarov.
Menendez called Hungary’s government to demand back Safarov to fulfill the sentence for life imprisonment. In the joint statement of representatives Denham and Nunes the congressman noted that “the decision of Azerbaijan’s President to pardon Ramil Safarov, which was sentenced for axing Armenia’s officer Gurgen Margaryan, ignores respect towards law predominance and draws back long time efforts to maintain peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This action is extremely disappointing and draws back peaceful settlement efforts.”
