Why was Varuzhan Karapetyan granted pardon? Robert Kocharyan’s office clarifies
Political
RA former President Robert Kocharyan’s office released a statement, which we present below:
“On September 12 mass media spread news on the meeting of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and ambassadors of OSCE member countries in Gabala City the day before. According to that information, during that meeting Aliyev announced that in 2001 Armenia’s President granted pardon to a terrorist with a surname Karapetyan which was sentenced to life in prison and the same year extradited to Armenia.
This statement doesn’t correspond to reality.
It is about citizen of Lebanon Varuzhan Karapetyan, which in 2001 was not extradited, but was grated pardon by French state agencies and only after that he moved to Armenia for permanent residence.”
With less efforts this information in detail can be found on the internet.
Thus, we need to register, that trying to justify Ramil Safarov’s granting pardon, Azerbaijan’s President either deliberately distorts historical facts or was unaware of the event.”
