2 Million iPhone Owners Set For Batterygate Payout
SocietyMore than 2 million iPhone owners are set to receive a cash settlement in an iPhone Batterygate case. The long-running case has seen Apple agree to pay at least $310 million to settle complaints that it artificially hampered the performance of selected iPhone models to preserve device battery life. Final settlement documents posted at the end of last week reveal that 2,268,860 claims for compensation have been approved, pending deduplication. More than a million claims for compensation were rejected, mainly on the grounds that the claimant’s device wasn’t among those affected by Batterygate. Affected handsets included the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and 6s, as well as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. U.S.-based owners of those handsets were invited to file claims online last summer. How much each individual is set to receive is still to be calculated, although it looks likely to be significantly higher than the minimum of $25 per handset that was originally stated.
