Local self-government elections were held on September 23 in 318 communities of Armenia’s five regions: Aragatsotn, Kotayk, Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor, Tavush.
RPA nominated 856 candidates: 241 – for head of community elections, 612 for member of the council of elders.
4 candidates were nominated in Abovyan City: current mayor Karapet Guloyan, nominated by PAP, self-nominated PAP member Karapet Israyelyan and non-partisan Artashes Mehrabyan and Andranik Petrosyan. Days later PAP member Karapet Israyelyan announced self-rejection. Andranik Petrosyan followed the latter’s example.
According to elections results Abovyan City current mayor PAP leader Gagik Tsarukyan’s son-in-law Karapet Guloyan was reelected in the position of a mayor.
Karapet Murad Guloyan gathered 10 .186 votes, Artashes Norik Mehrabyan 1778 votes. Number of invalid ballots was 791.
To Lurer.com’s question, why RPA didn’t nominate any candidate in Abovyan City head of community position, RPA speaker, NA vice-president Eduard Sharmazanov said, that RPA local self-government elections nominates candidates in places where finds appropriate.
“Appropriateness comes both from the community’s demands and works of city current mayor. We haven’t discussed nomination of a candidate in Abovyan City in party’s governing bodies,” Sharmazanov pointed out adding that RPA doesn’t’ suffer a party mania, that in a community with more than 900, do its best to nominate a candidate and lead to win. “We nominate in places, where we go, that there’s its need to solve the community problems.”
We both nominated and won the lion share. It’s good and it’s very important that majority of the community at community elections voted RPA candidate,” RPA speaker said.
