First bicycle route opened today in Armenia. It starts from Moscow street and reaches to Oval garden, stretching for 2.5 kilometers.
Head of municipality’s transport department Henrik Navasardyan, members of Kanachastan NGO and a number of cyclists attended the event.
Speaking to reporters, Navasardyan said the municipality was frequently getting proposals from the young people on developing bicycle culture in the capital.
“There was also government’s decision and our mayor, being always for changes and standing by the side of the young people, decided to establish an experimental cycling route. There is a government’s decision as well. In future we will see what issues exist and will give solutions to them,” he said.
Asked whether the route will not cause inconveniences to the pedestrians being on the sidewalk and not the street, Navasardyan said, “That’s why we are saying the program is experimental, we know that there will be difficulties, but if the route was on the street it would have created difficulties for drivers and cyclists.”
Stations have been built in the beginning and the end of the route.
