Job-creating leisure destination set to advance
LeisureLeisure developer STACK's plans to create a new destination on the site of a shopping centre in Northampton, with the scheme forecast to create almost 250 jobs, have been recommended for approval.
Market Walk shopping centre, in the town centre, has been empty for a number of years, with STACK planning to transform the retail space.
The venue will feature independent street food outlets, bars, a dedicated space for interactive games and a main stage for live music and entertainment.
"With its prime location in the heart of the town centre, STACK presents an excellent opportunity to create a dynamic and convenient destination for visitors and residents alike," said chief executive Neill Winch when plans were outlined. "The ongoing investment in Northampton's Market Square to revitalise the town centre aligns perfectly with our vision.
"By introducing STACK during this pivotal moment, we aim to contribute to the town's revival and enhance its appeal as a thriving hub of entertainment and leisure."
The applicant is expected to employ approximately 160 people at the site, in addition to an anticipated 97 employed by tenants, totalling 247 jobs.
A report drawn up for West Northamptonshire Council's strategic planning committee - which meets on 19 March - said: "Whilst it is noted that there are also elements of the development which would deliver incongruent elements and would not sit comfortably on the site, particularly in respect of heritage impacts, it is considered that these impacts would give rise to moderate less-than-substantial harm to heritage assets.
"It is officers' view that the proposed development is of acceptable design and that the public benefits the proposal would deliver would outweigh the identified harm to heritage assets."
Approval has been recommended, subject to conditions.
