Territorial integrity, sovereignty, and legislation of regional countries must be respected: Sheikholeslami
SocietyIn the emerging new world order, the role of regions has significantly increased, Mohammad Hassan Sheikholeslami, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, said during the "Yerevan Dialogue" conference.
"The South Caucasus is of great importance to my country. Iran is closely connected to this region through civilizational, historical, and cultural ties," said the diplomat. He added that, from a geopolitical perspective, the region serves as a strategic link for larger centers.
"The stability of this region has a direct impact on the northern borders of Iran and overall security. It is crucial for us to prevent the emergence of conflicts and destabilization in our area," Sheikholeslami stated.
From an economic standpoint, the region is vital for Tehran as a trade and energy transit route. "Iran is interested in utilizing these routes' potential to strengthen its connections with Europe and Eurasia, as well as providing its transportation infrastructure," the official said.
He welcomed the peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of accelerating the signing of a peace agreement. Once again, he reiterated Iran's position that the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and legislation of regional countries must be respected.
"It is important to decisively oppose any covert agenda related to the destabilization of the region and changes to internationally recognized borders," the Iranian diplomat said.
In that regard, he expressed Iran's support for the Armenian government's "Crossroads of Peace" initiative.
