Gang-Raped Indian Woman Dies in Singapore

A young Indian woman gang-raped aboard a bus in the Indian capital New Delhi earlier this month has died, media reported.
The woman "passed away peacefully" early on Saturday; her family and Indian officials stayed at her side, the CNN quoted Dr. Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, as saying in a statement.

The 23-year-old woman was raped and beaten by six drunk men on a bus in New Delhi. Six suspects have been arrested, including the bus driver and a minor.

Two police have been suspended, the BBC reported. The woman and her companion were beaten with iron bars and thrown out of the moving bus. The assault triggered violent public protests in India. One police officer was killed in the protests, the British broadcaster said.

The CNN said the woman had been in "extremely critical condition" since she was Thursday admitted to the Singapore hospital. Dr. Loh said Friday her condition deteriorated.

Explaining that she had suffered from “severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain,” Loh said that the woman was “courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.”

The Indian government plans to establish a commission to look into rape cases and suggest measures to improve safety of women. A report has to be submitted to the government in three months.
