Today is the founder-president of RA Levon Ter-Petrosyan's birthday.
Levon Ter-Petrosyan was born on January 9, 1945 in Aleppo, Syria. In 1946 the family moved to the Armenian SSR. In 1963, Ter-Petrosyan entered the Faculty of the Philology of Yerevan State University.
He played in the student community theater. In 1968 he graduated the Institute of Literature named Manuka Abeghyan Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. Later he continued his studies in graduate school at the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies. In 1972 he defended a thesis on the Armenian-Assyrian literary connections, becoming a candidate of philological sciences.
In 1972-1978 Ter-Petrosyan was a fellow at the Institute of Literature. From 1978 he worked at the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts Matenadaran after Mesrop Mashtots, worked at the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR as a scientific secretary, and in 1985 as a senior researcher.
In 1987, in Leningrad, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philology. In parallel with the main work in the Matenadaran from 1985 to 1988, he taught at the Echmiadzin Seminary.
In 1988, Levon Ter-Petrosyan was a member of the "Karabakh" committee, which demanded the withdrawal of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region from the jurisdiction of the Azerbaijan SSR, and was one of the leaders of the Armenian National Movement (ANM).
In December 1988, together with other members of the "Karabakh" committee was arrested. He was charged with "organizing mass disorder" and "inciting ethnic hatred". In May 1989, under public pressure he was released.
In August, 1989, Ter-Petrosyan was elected to the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR.
In November, 1989 - Chairman of the ANM. In August, 1990, he became Chairman of the Supreme Council of Armenia.
On October 6, 1991 Ter-Petrosyan was elected the first president of the independent Republic of Armenia.
On February 3, 1998 Ter-Petrosyan resigned from the post of president.
Lurer.com talked to politicians who congratulated Ter-Petrosyan, and commended the work of the latter.
The secretary of the parliamentary faction of "Prosperous Armenia" Naira Zohrabyan said that Ter-Petrosyan is a serious scientists.
"I want to congratulate the first president of the Republic of Armenia. Ter-Petrosyan is a serious scientists. I enjoy reading his books. We must be able to assess, leaving aside political differences and different motivations. We must be able to judge people who have had a major contribution in the development of our country. We must not forget that our country won a war in Levon Ter-Petrosyan's reign", said Zohrabyan.
Parliamentary group of the Armenian National Congress Bagratyan in his turn congratulated the President-founder of the Republic of Armenia, saying that he is appreciated him very much as a politician and he wants good for him.
Lurer.com also spoke with Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, member of the Republican Party of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov.
"He was the first president of my country. I have great respect for all the presidents of the country. There was a variety of political views, but I respect him. I wish you long life, the first president," Sharmazanov said.
The scretary of the "Heritage" party Stepan Safaryan, in a conversation with us, said that during the birthdays we rarely mention the shortcomings of the person, we remember only good. "Congratulations to the first President of the Republic of Armenia on the occasion of his birthday. He led the country in a difficult time, and no matter how evaluated during his reign, one thing is clear, in these years, Armenia and Karabak won the war. There might be errors, omissions, deficiencies, some of which were even rude and unacceptable, at least in the years of his reign, Levon Ter-Petrosyan provided a way out of the war, which allows to evaluate him highly."
The deputy of the Armenian National Congress Gagik Jhangiryan in conversation with us said that he would personally congratulate Levon Ter-Petrosyan and would personally convey his wishes for the first president of RA.
