Mourinho to rest Alonso
Sport
Jose Mourinho has decided to give his players two days off to allow them to disconnect and recharge their batteries with the aim of making Real Madrid's three tough encounters against Valencia slightly easier on the legs. Some of the players are due a much-needed rest after the effort made over the course of the season, although this privilege would not be available if Real were still in contention for La Liga title.
The Portuguese coach believes Xabi Alonso is the greatest example of a professional who gives his all on the pitch and that the midfielder could do with a couple of days off. Alonso may well be rested for Real's match on Sunday, or at least as a substitute, and could also be on the bench at the Mestalla stadium.
The former Liverpool man is part of the furniture of Mourinho's team, but has been playing with neck pain since the return leg of the Copa del Rey - against Celta de Vigo – and the coach believes it would be good for his player to rest.
Leaving out Alonso of the Real starting eleven is not something that Mourinho favours, as he sees the Spaniard as the heart of the team. 'The Special One' sees Alonso as the most intelligent player, with the highest level of tactical understanding in the squad. The midfielder reads the game well and helps out in both defence and attack.
