Reserves of high quality oil have been discovered in the Magrip field in the Turkish province of Siirt Kurtalan, the Aksham newspaper reported on Thursday.
Oil reserves were found at a depth of two thousand metres as a result of exploratory works carried out on this field during the past two and a half months.
Earlier, a Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources report stated that within the work on discovery of new oil and gas wells in Turkey, TPAO has opened 11 wells of oil and six natural gas wells in the country.
In total, during the aforementioned period, 56 wells were drilled, of which 54 are on the ground and two on the seabed.
According to the report, on-going drilling of seven wells is currently underway. Eight oil fields were discovered in the south-eastern part of the country in 2012.
Turkey is actively searching for oil fields in order to reduce dependence on oil from overseas. High expectations were placed upon exploration activities in the area of Sinop in 2012, but that yielded no results.
