Netanyahu aims to form as broad-based coalition as possible

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is almost certain to be tapped to form Israel's next government, said he would form as broad-based a government as possible, and has already begun moves to do so, dpa reported.

Addressing activists at his Likud-Beteinu election headquarters in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said that his next government would be based around five principles.

He named them as security, especially ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons; economic responsibility; diplomatic attempts to bring about a true peace with the Palestinians; a fairer share of military obligations among Israeli citizens; and lowering the cost of living, especially housing prices.

Exit polls broadcast on three television channels after voting ended predicted the Likud-Beteinu would win 31 of the 120 seats in parliament, far fewer than predicted before the election, but enough to make it the largest faction in the House.
