Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted the former England captain is training with the Gunners purely to work on his fitness.

The former England captain joined Arsène Wenger's squad this morning at London Colney in a bid to prove he can still compete at the top level. Beckham, 37, is a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy in December after a five-year spell in America.

Beckham is yet to decide on his future despite there being much interest from QPR and West Ham in the Premier League and interest further afield from Paris St Germain and AC Milan.

It is no secret that Wenger respects Beckham's professionalism and attitude, and the Arsenal manager has regularly signed experienced heads in recent seasons. He brought Sol Campbell, Thierry Henry and Jens Lehmann back to the club for short-term spells, with largely positive results.
