February 19 “Book Donation day”

Books published by state funded and private publishers will be collected and offered to different population groups of the society. Writers and bibliophiles will speak and discuss about the necessity of books and reading.

It is the third year since the RA writers union has declared February 19 – Hovhannes Tumanyan’s birthday – book donation day. Last year the RA education and science minister joined the initiative.

Levon Ananyan, chairman of the RA writers union, said today at a meeting with journalists that there is a crisis of book reading, so the initiative is aimed at riveting attention on one of the most important strategic issues of our state – upbringing of educated generation.

Every month the union organizes meetings of teachers of the Armenian language and literature and ‘Literary crossroads’ in the marzes. Book donation events will be held tomorrow, 100 books will be secured to each marz and local literary unions will secure books to schools. It is the 6th year, since books have been delivered to the Diaspora as well.

Levon Ananyan mentioned that junior literature is in the limelight, as it is an important period for formation of interest towards books. The ‘I am a Friend of Book’ telethon will be conducted April 30 on the public TV.
