Bulgarians in electricity price protests
World
People across Bulgaria – including some 10,000 in Sofia, 40,000 in Varna, 10,000 in Plovdiv and 5,000 in Dobrich – have turned out for demonstrations and rallies in support of proposals to nationalize the electricity industry.
A total of 40 cities and towns were involved. Police stood by but did not intervene.
Bulgarian household electricity bills have almost doubled over the past two months, amounting to nearly one half of the average wage.
Public anger over this has forced the government of Boiko Borisov to step down. Borisov announced this decision last Wednesday.
