Word 'Negro' to be removed from US Census surveys
USA
The US Census Bureau will no longer use the word "Negro" to describe black Americans in surveys.
Instead of the word "‘Negro" that has been in use for 100 years census forms will use the words "black" or '"African-American."
The change will take effect next year when the Census Bureau holds its annual nationwide survey.
The word "Negro"’ gradually went out of use following the expansion of the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
