Probes detect third radiation belt around Earth
Science and culture
NASA experts have discovered a new radiation belt around the Earth. The third, previously unknown radiation belt was spotted by space probes between two high-radiation areas several thousand kilometers above Earth.
NASA experts are confused by what they describe as “mysterious and phenomenal” discovery which contradicts the theory about Van Allen radiation belts discovered in 1958.
The Earth’s radiation belts are part of the system called the magnetosphere which has high concentrations of charged particles, mainly protons and electrons.
