French unions go on strike

French trade unions go on a national strike today to protest against a government draft facilitating workers' dismissal or demotion.
Social sector, postal and transport workers are expected to join in the walkout announced by the General Confederation of Labor and the Labor Force unions.
The strike may seriously hamper traffic with local train service due to be cut by 20 percent.
