A monument to the so-called miracle pine tree, the only one to remain standing among tens of thousands on a beach inundated by the 2011 tsunami, was unveiled in the Japanese city of Rikuzentakata on Wednesday.
Since 2011, the tree has been plagued by rotting roots due to groundwater that is high in salinity, according to environmentalists.
At the end of the day, a decision was made to preserve the trunk as a monument.
