Messi makes it 17
Sport
Even when he starts the match on the bench, Lionel Messi just can't seem to stop from scoring in La Liga. For the 17th consecutive league contest in a row, the diminutive Argentine found the back of the net, this time in Barcelona's underwhelming 2-0 home win over Deportivo.
Saturday's strike against the Galicians now gives Messi 40 goals on the season in La Liga. One has to go all the way back to Barcelona's November 3rd 3-1 home win over Celta to find the last time Messi did not score in league play for the Catalonians.
The manner in which Messi accomplished this feat was as artful as ever as he played a quick one-two with Alexis Sanchez before deftly chipping over the head of Deportivo keeper Aranzubia.
Interestingly enough, the last time Messi started on the bench and came on as a substitute, he also ended up scoring. That was back in September as his brace powered Barcelona to a 4-1 win over Getafe.
